HOW TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE TOAD'S EXCURSIONS

We encourage dialog with our reader's. Isn't that what words are for? We also cheerfully accept criticism and suggestions. Some of the best excursions are a result of a word hurled at us.

We, on occasion, send out emails with a new excursion included or the announcement of a new excursion on line. If you would like to be included on this mailing list, just send in the form below.

How about that! Another site devoted to logophilia. What a treat.

I was particularly pleased to see one of my favorite words, "celerity" in your Excursus #1.

In case you are interested, I contrast "celerity" with "alacrity", which most dictionaries give simply as a synonym. However, there is a slight difference in nuance.

Both words describe quickness, but I make this distinction: "celerity" describes the quickness with which one performs a task; "alacrity" describes the quickness with which one begins the task. Dictionaries reflect this distinction in describing "alacrity" as expressing eagerness or willingness.

When I command my children to perform some chore "with utmost of alacrity," I want them to begin right away, but I have not expressed how speedily they should work at the task. When I direct them to perform some task with celerity, I want them to perform the task speedily. However, I have neglected to tell them how soon they should begin. But when I care about how soon that task is completed, I instruct them that I want them to do it with "utmost of alacrity AND celerity."

For what it's worth, these words appear to have been incorporated into the business names of two modern high-tech corporations. Alacron (http://www.alacron.com/) makes frame grabbers and vision systems, which provide for high speed acquisition and digitization of visual images. Celeritek (http://www.celeritek.com/) makes products to support wireless transfer of data at high speeds. It was fun to discover some companies whose names were (apparantly) chosen by someone a little more literate than the average Joe.

This is a nice site, I am glad I discovered it for myself. Very clear descriptions and definitions. Adn I love the idea of using previously introduced words in example sentences. They're fun to read (as much as to write, I'm sure) :-)

A small error I would like to point out...I came across the word "dacha" and noticed a spelling mistake: "Tsarkoye Selo" is really "Tsarskoye Selo", I'm pretty sure.

Great site! I found it when I "asked Jeeves" the origin of the word "jock" to help settle a discussion a friend and I were having. Given my fascination with words, I'll be visiting frequently!

Thanks, Kesha
